Count the number of atoms, ions, or ligands directly bonded to it
Ignore atoms in other coordination spheres
For metals, count donor atoms attached through coordinate bonds
For ionic crystals, count nearest neighboring oppositely charged ions
For complex ions, count only atoms directly attached to the metal center
The total count is the coordination number
