How To Find How Many Electrons Are In An Element?

Find the element’s atomic number on the periodic table

The atomic number equals the number of protons

In a neutral atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons

So, for a neutral atom, electrons = atomic number

For an ion, adjust for charge

A positive charge means fewer electrons than the atomic number

A negative charge means more electrons than the atomic number

Electrons = atomic number minus positive charge

Electrons = atomic number plus negative charge
