Measure the distance from one side to the other
Use a ruler, tape measure, or caliper
Place the measuring tool straight across the widest part
Read the value at the opposite edge
Record the measurement in the desired unit
For a rectangle, use the shorter side as the width
For a circle, measure across the widest point if needed
For irregular shapes, measure the widest horizontal span
