Rest the toe and avoid putting weight on it
Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time every 1 to 2 hours for the first 48 hours
Elevate the foot above heart level when possible
Tape the broken toe to the neighboring toe if it is not crooked or badly deformed
Place gauze or cotton between the toes before taping
Wear a stiff-soled shoe or sandal to limit toe movement
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Keep the foot clean and dry
Seek medical care if the toe is visibly crooked, numb, blue, or severely swollen
Seek medical care if there is an open wound, bleeding, or nail injury
Seek medical care if you cannot walk or pain is severe
Seek medical care if symptoms do not improve within a few days
Get urgent care if you suspect a fracture in a child or if the big toe is injured
