Rest the affected area
Avoid activities that worsen the pain
Use ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time during the first 48 hours
Use heat after the first 48 hours if it helps
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Maintain good posture
Adjust your workstation, chair, and sleeping position
Do gentle stretching if it does not increase pain
Stay active with light movement as tolerated
Avoid heavy lifting and repetitive motions
Wear supportive footwear if the pain affects your legs or back
See a doctor if symptoms last more than a few days
Seek urgent care if you have severe weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or worsening pain
