Check your state’s CDL requirements and age limits
Choose the CDL class you need (A, B, or C)
Decide on required endorsements (if any) such as HazMat, Tank, Passenger, or double/triple trailers
Obtain a CDL commercial learner’s permit (CLP)
Study the CDL manual for your state and the CDL class/endorsements you’re pursuing
Pass the required written knowledge tests
Complete required medical certification (DOT medical card or state-approved equivalent)
Provide proof of identity, legal presence, and residency as required by your state
Get a CDL skills test appointment (road test)
Practice with a qualified CDL instructor and the required vehicle type
Pass the CDL pre-trip inspection test
Pass the CDL basic control skills test (if required in your state)
Pass the CDL road test
Pay all required CDL fees
Receive your CDL license
If you have HazMat: complete TSA background/security threat assessment and pass any additional steps required by your state
Maintain your CDL by renewing on time and meeting medical/endorsement requirements
