How To Get A US Passport?

Determine whether you need a first-time US passport, a renewal, or a replacement

Complete Form DS-11 (first-time passport, renewals not eligible for DS-82, or if you’re not using DS-82)

Gather required identity documents (one photo ID such as a driver’s license, government ID, or military ID)

Gather proof of US citizenship (acceptable documents include a US birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, naturalization certificate, or prior passport)

Provide a passport photo that meets US requirements (color, white/cream background, specific size, no head coverings except religious reasons, no glasses unless allowed)

Find an acceptance facility to submit in person (passport acceptance facility at a post office or other authorized location)

Bring the completed application, required documents, and payment to the acceptance facility

Pay the required application fees (check/money order or credit/debit where accepted, plus acceptance and execution fees as applicable)

Submit your application in person and receive a receipt/confirmation

Track your application and delivery status online after submission

If applying for expedited service, select expedited processing options and include any required fees

If you need a passport urgently, use an approved urgent travel appointment or a passport agency workflow where available
