How to Get an IRS PIN?

Determine which PIN you need: an IRS Identity Protection PIN or an IRS e-file PIN

For an Identity Protection PIN, use the IRS online IP PIN tool at IRS.gov

Create or sign in to your IRS Online Account

Complete identity verification

Request an IP PIN through the account

If you cannot verify online, use the IRS IP PIN phone line or submit Form 15227 if eligible

If you already received an IP PIN letter, use the PIN shown in the letter

For an e-file PIN, use the IRS online PIN retrieval tool if available

If you do not have an e-file PIN, use your prior-year adjusted gross income and prior-year self-selected PIN to electronically file

Contact the IRS if you need help with PIN access or replacement

Keep the PIN secure and use it on your tax return when required
