Stay calm and keep people and pets away from the room
Close interior doors to confine the bat to one area
Open windows and exterior doors in that room
Turn off indoor lights and leave an outside light on if possible
Do not try to catch the bat with bare hands
Do not swat at the bat or throw objects at it
Put on thick gloves if you must handle anything near it
If the bat is resting, wait for it to land before approaching
Use a box or container and a piece of cardboard to trap it only if necessary
Release the bat outside only if you can do so safely
If the bat may have bitten or touched anyone, contact local health authorities or a doctor immediately
If the bat is in a bedroom with a sleeping person, contact animal control or public health right away
After the bat is out, check for entry points and seal gaps, vents, and openings
If you cannot safely remove it, call wildlife control or animal control
