Determine whether you need an Emotional Support Animal letter from a licensed mental health professional
Schedule an evaluation with a licensed therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, or other qualified provider
Discuss your mental or emotional health condition and how the dog provides support
Request an ESA letter if the provider determines you qualify
Make sure the ESA letter is current, signed, and on the provider’s official letterhead
Keep in mind there is no official government certification or registry for emotional support dogs
Avoid paying for fake online “certifications” or “registrations” that do not replace a valid ESA letter
Check housing rules and provide the ESA letter to your landlord or housing provider if needed
Follow local leash, licensing, vaccination, and pet control laws
Train and care for the dog so it behaves appropriately in housing and public settings where pets are allowed
