Apply a cold compress or ice wrapped in cloth for 10–15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated while sleeping
Avoid touching, rubbing, or pressing the lip
Rinse gently with cool water if it is dirty or irritated
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine if the swelling is from an allergic reaction and you can safely take it
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed and safe for you
Avoid hot, spicy, salty, or acidic foods and drinks
Avoid alcohol and smoking
Use petroleum jelly or a plain lip balm if the lip is dry or cracked
Remove any known trigger such as lipstick, food, or dental product
Seek urgent medical care if you have trouble breathing, throat swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, or rapidly worsening swelling
