Apply warm, moist compresses for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times daily
Keep the area clean with soap and water
Do not squeeze, pop, or pick at the furuncle
Cover it with a clean, dry bandage
Wash hands before and after touching the area
Use separate towels, washcloths, and bedding
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and safe for you
Seek medical care if it is large, very painful, on the face, or keeps coming back
Seek medical care if you have fever, spreading redness, or red streaks
Seek medical care if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or multiple boils
A doctor may need to drain it or prescribe antibiotics
