Confirm live lice or nits on the scalp, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck
Use an over-the-counter lice treatment exactly as directed on the label
Repeat the treatment if the product instructions require it
Use a fine-toothed lice comb on wet, conditioned hair to remove lice and nits
Comb small sections of hair from scalp to ends
Check and comb the hair every 2 to 3 days for at least 2 weeks
Wash bedding, hats, scarves, and recently worn clothing in hot water and dry on high heat
Seal items that cannot be washed in a plastic bag for 2 weeks
Vacuum furniture, car seats, and floors
Do not share combs, brushes, hats, helmets, or hair accessories
Check all household members for lice and treat only those with live lice
Avoid using lice sprays on people or pets
Avoid head-to-head contact until treatment is complete
See a healthcare professional if lice persist after treatment or if the scalp is irritated or infected
