Confirm live lice or nits on the scalp, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck

Use an over-the-counter lice treatment exactly as directed on the label

Repeat the treatment if the product instructions require it

Use a fine-toothed lice comb on wet, conditioned hair to remove lice and nits

Comb small sections of hair from scalp to ends

Check and comb the hair every 2 to 3 days for at least 2 weeks

Wash bedding, hats, scarves, and recently worn clothing in hot water and dry on high heat

Seal items that cannot be washed in a plastic bag for 2 weeks

Vacuum furniture, car seats, and floors

Do not share combs, brushes, hats, helmets, or hair accessories

Check all household members for lice and treat only those with live lice

Avoid using lice sprays on people or pets

Avoid head-to-head contact until treatment is complete

See a healthcare professional if lice persist after treatment or if the scalp is irritated or infected
