Do not squeeze or pop it
Wash your hands before touching the area
Clean the outer ear gently with mild soap and water
Apply a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Keep earbuds, headphones, and hearing aids clean
Avoid putting cotton swabs or other objects into the ear canal
Use over-the-counter acne treatment only on the outer ear, not inside the ear canal
Keep hair products, oils, and makeup away from the ear
Avoid sleeping on the affected side if it is painful
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed and if safe for you
See a doctor if it is very painful, swollen, draining pus, affecting hearing, or not improving in a few days
Seek urgent care if you have fever, spreading redness, or severe swelling
