Apply a cold compress to the swollen area for 10–15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated, especially when lying down
Drink plenty of water
Reduce salt intake
Avoid alcohol
Get enough sleep
Use an antihistamine if the swelling is due to allergies and you can safely take one
Avoid known allergens or irritants
Take a pain reliever or anti-inflammatory only if it is safe for you to do so
Gently massage the face if swelling is mild and not caused by injury or infection
Treat sinus congestion if that is the cause
See a doctor if swelling is severe, sudden, painful, or lasts more than a day or two
Get urgent medical help if you have trouble breathing, lip or tongue swelling, fever, or signs of infection
