Ask for consent and check for any pain, injuries, or medical conditions
Have the person lie face down or sit comfortably with their back exposed
Wash your hands and warm them by rubbing them together
Use a small amount of massage oil or lotion if desired
Start with gentle strokes from the lower back up toward the shoulders
Use both hands with even pressure and smooth, slow movements
Work along the muscles on either side of the spine, not directly on the spine
Use circular motions on the shoulders and upper back
Apply light to medium pressure and adjust based on feedback
Focus on tight areas with slow kneading or gentle pressing
Keep your movements relaxed and consistent
Avoid pressing on bones, the spine, or sore injuries
Check in regularly to make sure the pressure feels comfortable
Finish with lighter strokes to help the person relax
Stop immediately if the person feels pain, dizziness, or discomfort
