Choose a ripe avocado
Remove the pit carefully
Wash the pit clean
Insert three to four toothpicks into the pit
Suspend the pit over a glass of water with the bottom half submerged
Place the glass in a warm, bright location
Change the water every few days
Wait for roots and a stem to grow
When the stem is several inches tall, transplant the pit into soil
Use a pot with drainage holes
Plant the pit with the top half exposed above the soil
Water the soil regularly but do not overwater
Keep the plant in bright, indirect sunlight
Fertilize lightly during the growing season
Move to a larger pot as the plant grows
Protect the plant from cold temperatures
Prune the top occasionally to encourage branching
