Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date
Fill seed trays or small pots with a sterile seed-starting mix
Moisten the mix before planting
Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep
Cover lightly with seed-starting mix
Keep the soil consistently moist, not soggy
Place trays in a warm location, around 70 to 80°F
Provide bright light after seedlings emerge
Use grow lights or a sunny south-facing window
Keep lights close to seedlings to prevent legginess
Thin seedlings if more than one grows in each cell or pot
Transplant seedlings into larger pots when they have true leaves
Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions
Plant outdoors after all frost danger has passed
Choose a location with full sun
Prepare soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter
Space plants according to the variety’s requirements
Plant seedlings deeper than they were in the pot
Water thoroughly after transplanting
Add stakes, cages, or trellises for support
Water regularly throughout the growing season
Mulch around plants to retain moisture and reduce weeds
Feed plants with a balanced fertilizer as needed
Remove suckers if desired for better airflow and fruit size
Monitor for pests and diseases
Harvest tomatoes when they are fully colored and slightly soft
