Rinse with warm salt water 3–4 times a day
Use a baking soda rinse once or twice daily
Avoid spicy, acidic, salty, and rough foods
Eat soft, cool foods
Drink plenty of water
Use an alcohol-free mouthwash
Apply an over-the-counter oral ulcer gel or paste
Use a topical numbing gel if needed
Take over-the-counter pain relief if safe for you
Avoid biting the ulcer or irritating it with teeth
Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush
Avoid smoking and alcohol
Manage stress and get enough sleep
Check for sharp teeth, braces, or dentures causing irritation
See a dentist or doctor if ulcers last more than 2 weeks, are very large, keep returning, or come with fever, swelling, or trouble eating or swallowing
