How To Impeach A President?

Determine whether the president has committed “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors”

Gather evidence and document alleged misconduct

Members of the House of Representatives introduce articles of impeachment

The House Judiciary Committee or another relevant committee investigates the allegations

The committee debates and votes on proposed articles of impeachment

The full House debates the articles of impeachment

The House votes on each article of impeachment by simple majority

If any article passes, the president is impeached

The Senate holds a trial on the impeachment

Senators act as jurors and the Chief Justice presides if the president is tried

The House appoints impeachment managers to present the case

The president may present a defense through counsel

The Senate deliberates and votes on conviction for each article

A two-thirds vote of senators present is required to convict

If convicted, the president is removed from office

The Senate may also vote to disqualify the president from future federal office

If not convicted, the president remains in office
