How To Irrigate A Foley?

Verify the order or facility protocol for Foley catheter irrigation

Perform hand hygiene and gather sterile supplies

Explain the procedure to the patient

Position the patient comfortably and protect linens with a waterproof pad

Clamp the catheter if required by protocol

Clean the catheter access port with antiseptic

Attach a sterile syringe to the irrigation port or catheter as directed

Gently instill the prescribed sterile irrigation solution

Do not force fluid if resistance is met

Aspirate or allow return flow if ordered or if using a closed-system irrigation setup

Observe the color, amount, and presence of clots or debris in the return

Repeat only as ordered or per protocol

Disconnect the syringe and keep the system closed if possible

Unclamp the catheter if it was clamped

Ensure urine is draining freely into the collection bag

Dispose of supplies properly

Perform hand hygiene

Document the irrigation solution used, amount instilled, amount returned, urine characteristics, and patient response
