Check the expiration or “best by” date
Look for cracks, leaks, or unusual discoloration on the shell
Do the water test: fresh eggs sink and lay flat; bad eggs float
Crack the egg into a separate bowl before using
A fresh egg has little to no odor
A bad egg smells sour, rotten, or sulfur-like
A fresh egg white is thick and the yolk stays rounded
A bad egg may have runny whites, a flat yolk, or an unusual appearance
If the egg looks or smells off, throw it away
Store eggs properly in the refrigerator to help them stay good longer
