Check the expiration or best-by date
Look for cracks, slime, or unusual discoloration on the shell
Smell the egg after cracking it open
Look for a bad, sulfur-like, or rotten odor
Inspect the egg white and yolk for unusual colors or textures
Do the water test: fresh eggs sink, bad eggs float
Discard eggs that float in water
Discard eggs with an off smell, even if the date is still valid
Discard eggs if the shell is leaking or sticky
Discard eggs if they look moldy or unusually cloudy
When in doubt, throw it out
