Sit quietly and rest for 5–10 minutes

Recheck your blood pressure after resting
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and exercise
Drink a glass of water if you may be dehydrated
Loosen tight clothing
If prescribed, take your blood pressure medicine exactly as directed
If you were told to use a rescue medication, take it as prescribed
Reduce salt intake immediately
Keep your head elevated
Stay calm and avoid stress or panic
Seek urgent medical care if blood pressure is 180/120 or higher, or if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or vision changes
