Wash the asparagus and trim off the woody ends
Heat a skillet over medium heat
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil or butter
Place the asparagus in the pan in a single layer
Sprinkle with salt and pepper
Cook for 5 to 8 minutes, turning occasionally
Add minced garlic or lemon juice if desired
Remove from the pan when tender and lightly browned
Serve immediately
