Check local fire rules and weather conditions
Choose a safe, open campsite away from tents, trees, and dry brush
Clear a wide area down to bare soil or mineral ground
Build or use an existing fire ring if allowed
Gather tinder, kindling, and larger firewood
Keep water, a shovel, and a fire extinguisher nearby
Place tinder in the center of the fire ring
Arrange kindling loosely over the tinder
Add small firewood around the kindling
Light the tinder with a match or lighter
Feed the fire gradually as it catches
Never leave the fire unattended
Keep the fire small and manageable
Extinguish the fire completely with water
Stir the ashes and add more water until cold
Make sure all embers are out before leaving
