Pat cube steak dry with paper towels
Season both sides with salt and pepper
Dredge in flour, if desired
Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat
Add the cube steak to the hot skillet
Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side until browned
Reduce heat if needed to prevent burning
Add onions, garlic, or gravy ingredients if desired
Cover and simmer on low heat until tender, about 20 to 30 minutes
Check that the steak is cooked through
Serve hot
