How To Make Homemade Chili?

Heat 1 to 2 tablespoons oil in a large pot over medium heat

Add 1 chopped onion and cook until softened

Add 2 to 4 minced garlic cloves and cook briefly

Add 1 to 2 pounds ground beef, turkey, or plant-based substitute

Cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks

Drain excess fat if needed

Stir in 2 to 3 tablespoons chili powder

Add 1 teaspoon ground cumin

Add 1 teaspoon paprika

Add 1/2 teaspoon oregano

Add salt and black pepper to taste

Add 1 to 2 tablespoons tomato paste

Add 1 can diced tomatoes

Add 1 can tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes

Add 1 to 2 cups broth or water

Add 1 can drained beans, such as kidney beans or black beans

Bring to a boil

Reduce heat to low

Simmer for 30 to 60 minutes, stirring occasionally

Add more broth or water if needed

Taste and adjust seasoning

Serve hot with toppings if desired
