Chill a mixing bowl and beaters in the refrigerator for 10 to 15 minutes
Pour 1 cup heavy cream into the chilled bowl
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons powdered sugar, if desired
Add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, if desired
Whip with a hand mixer or whisk until soft peaks form
Continue whipping until stiff peaks form
Use immediately or refrigerate until needed
