Gently wash the area with mild soap and water once or twice daily
Pat the skin dry with a clean towel; do not rub
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to keep the scab moist
Do not pick, scratch, or peel the scab
Use a clean, nonstick bandage if the area may get rubbed or touched
Change the bandage daily or if it becomes wet or dirty
Avoid using harsh products like alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or scrubs on the scab
Protect the area from sun exposure with a hat or sunscreen once the skin is closed
Keep your hands clean before touching your face
Eat enough protein, fruits, and vegetables and drink plenty of water
Get enough sleep to support healing
Seek medical care if the scab becomes very red, swollen, warm, painful, or starts draining pus
Seek medical care if you have fever, the wound is deep, or it is not healing after 1 to 2 weeks
