How to Make Tom and Jerry’s?

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup milk

1/2 cup brandy or rum

1/2 cup dark rum or cognac

6 eggs, separated

1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

1/2 cup powdered sugar

Ground nutmeg for garnish

Hot milk or water for serving

Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy

Add eggs one at a time

Mix in vanilla

Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon

Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients alternately with milk

Stir in brandy or rum

Beat egg whites with cream of tartar until stiff peaks form

Fold egg whites into batter

Chill batter

Beat egg yolks with powdered sugar until thick and pale

Fold yolk mixture into batter

Serve in mugs

Add 1 to 2 tablespoons batter to each mug

Add 1 ounce brandy or cognac

Add hot milk or hot water

Top with nutmeg

Serve immediately
