Gather 6 to 8 vanilla beans
Use 1 cup of vodka, bourbon, or rum
Split the vanilla beans lengthwise
Place the beans in a clean glass jar
Pour the alcohol over the beans until fully covered
Seal the jar tightly
Store in a cool, dark place
Shake the jar once a week
Let it steep for at least 2 months
For best flavor, steep for 6 to 12 months
Strain if desired before using
Refill with more alcohol as needed to keep the beans covered
