Place a rain gauge in an open area away from buildings and trees
Ensure the gauge is upright and level
Let rain collect in the gauge during the rainfall period
After the rain stops, read the water level in the measuring tube or container
Measure the collected water directly in centimeters if the gauge has a cm scale
If the reading is in millimeters, divide by 10 to get centimeters
Record the final rainfall amount in cm
Empty the gauge before the next rainfall measurement
