Hold the compass flat in your hand
Let the needle settle completely
Turn your body until the north end of the needle lines up with N on the compass
Keep the direction-of-travel arrow pointing where you want to go
Rotate the bezel until the orienting arrow matches the needle
Read the bearing at the index line
Follow the direction-of-travel arrow while keeping the needle aligned with the orienting arrow
Recheck the needle often to stay on course
Avoid using the compass near metal objects, magnets, or electronics
Use a map with the compass for accurate navigation
