Learn the court layout and basic positions
Understand the objective: send the ball over the net and make it land in the opponent’s court
Form a team of six players on each side for standard indoor volleyball
Start the rally with a serve from behind the end line
Use up to three team contacts to return the ball over the net
Pass the ball with a forearm pass or bump
Set the ball with an overhead finger pass
Attack the ball with a spike or hit
Block the opponent’s attack at the net
Rotate clockwise each time your team wins the serve from the other team
Avoid letting the ball touch the floor on your side
Avoid hitting the ball out of bounds
Avoid touching the net during play
Avoid holding, lifting, or carrying the ball
Score a point when the ball lands in the opponent’s court or they commit a fault
Win the set by reaching the required points first, usually 25 with a two-point lead
Win the match by winning the required number of sets, usually best of five
Communicate with teammates during play
Practice serving, passing, setting, hitting, and blocking regularly
