Clear the area around the hole

Cut away loose or damaged drywall

Fill small holes with spackle or joint compound

Apply self-adhesive mesh tape over larger holes

Cut a drywall patch to fit the opening

Secure the patch with drywall screws or backing strips

Cover seams and screw heads with joint compound

Let the compound dry completely

Sand the repaired area smooth

Apply a second coat if needed

Sand again after drying

Prime the patched area
