Put on gloves
Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool
Part the fur and locate the tick close to the skin
Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible
Pull straight up with steady, even pressure
Do not twist, jerk, crush, or squeeze the tick
If mouthparts remain, do not dig at the skin
Clean the bite area with antiseptic or soap and water
Clean your hands and the tool
Dispose of the tick in alcohol, sealed tape, or a sealed bag
Monitor your dog for redness, swelling, lethargy, fever, or loss of appetite
Contact a veterinarian if the area worsens or your dog seems unwell
