Measure the stairs, including tread depth, riser height, width, and total stair length
Choose a carpet and underlay suitable for stairs
Remove old carpet, staples, tack strips, and debris
Repair any damaged stair treads or risers
Install tack strips on each tread, leaving a small gap from the edges
Cut and fit carpet padding to each tread only, securing it in place
Cut carpet pieces for the stairs or prepare a continuous runner
Start at the top stair and position the carpet evenly
Staple or tack the carpet at the back of each tread and under the nosing
Stretch the carpet tightly over each tread and down the riser
Use a stair tool to tuck the carpet into corners and along edges
Secure the carpet on each riser and tread as you move downward
Trim excess carpet neatly along the sides
Finish by securing the bottom edge and checking for loose areas
Vacuum the stairs and inspect for wrinkles or gaps
