Pick a reading direction for the publication (right-to-left for traditional tankōbon; left-to-right for some translations)
Start at the first page of the first chapter
Read panels in the intended order (follow the right-to-left or left-to-right flow and move from top to bottom)
Read dialogue bubbles in order, starting with the bubble closest to the top-right (or top-left in left-to-right editions)
Follow sound effects (SFX) placement to understand action and emphasis
Track character actions across consecutive panels to keep the scene continuity
Read the page layout (wide panels first when they act as the scene anchor)
Pay attention to visual cues (expressions, composition, arrows, onomatopoeia, repeated symbols)
If you get lost, reread the last page or two to re-establish who/where/when
Use chapter breaks and title pages to orient yourself
If you’re reading in English or another language, follow the translator’s formatting choices (panel order and SFX placement may differ)
Use bookmarks or notes to mark confusing parts
Look up unfamiliar terms or references using the official translation’s glossary or reputable resources
Keep track of recurring names, locations, and relationships as you go
Adjust reading speed based on density (slower for complex dialogue; faster for action sequences)
Continue to the next page/chapter without skipping unless you specifically want spoilers
If you want spoilers avoided, stop before chapter summaries or recommendations that reveal plot points
