Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the label
Eat soft foods for a few days
Avoid hard, sticky, crunchy, or chewy foods
Rinse with warm salt water
Use orthodontic wax on irritating brackets or wires
Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth
Drink cold water or suck on ice chips
Brush and floss gently
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush
Try a numbing oral gel if appropriate for you
Stick to small bites and chew slowly
Contact your orthodontist if pain is severe, persistent, or caused by a broken wire or bracket
