Apply a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time during the first 24 to 48 hours
Repeat the cold compress every 1 to 2 hours while awake
Keep your head elevated, especially when resting or sleeping
Use gentle pressure only; do not press hard on the eye
After 48 hours, switch to a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times daily
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if swelling or bleeding is a concern
Rest the eye and avoid strenuous activity
Do not rub or massage the area
Use arnica or vitamin K cream only if the skin is intact and you tolerate it
Cover the bruise with makeup if needed after swelling has gone down
Seek medical care if you have vision changes, severe pain, blood in the eye, vomiting, headache, or the injury was caused by a hard hit
