Turn off power to the smoke alarm at the circuit breaker if it is hardwired
Twist the alarm counterclockwise to release it from the mounting bracket
If it has a locking pin or tamper lock, remove or release it first
Disconnect the wiring harness by pressing the connector tab and pulling it apart
Remove the battery or backup battery if present
Take the mounting bracket off the ceiling or wall by removing the screws
If the alarm is battery-only, open the battery compartment and remove the battery
Dispose of or replace the alarm according to local regulations and the manufacturer’s instructions
