Turn off the alarm if it has a hush or silence button
Remove the smoke detector from its mounting bracket if needed
Open the battery compartment
Take out the old battery
Insert the new battery with the correct polarity
Close the battery compartment
Reattach the smoke detector if removed
Press the test button to confirm it works
Replace the battery immediately if the low-battery chirp continues
Replace the entire unit if it is past its expiration date
