Click the Control Center icon in the menu bar
Click Screen Mirroring
Select the device or display you want to mirror to
Enter the AirPlay code if prompted
To stop mirroring, click Screen Mirroring again and select Stop Mirroring
If using a cable, connect the external display to your MacBook with the proper adapter or cable
Open System Settings
Click Displays
Choose the external display and adjust mirroring settings if needed
