Gather the title, registration, and maintenance records
Make sure the vehicle is paid off or get the lien release from the lender
Complete the odometer disclosure if required
Sign the title over to the buyer exactly as required
Fill out and submit the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability to the California DMV
Remove your license plates unless the vehicle is transferred with plates allowed by law
Cancel or transfer your insurance after the sale
Provide the buyer with a bill of sale if desired
Give the buyer a valid smog certificate if required for the sale
Remove personal items and clear your toll tags and parking permits
Keep copies of all sale documents for your records
