Choose a safe snorkeling location with calm, clear water
Check weather, tides, currents, and local conditions before entering
Use properly fitted mask, snorkel, fins, and optional rash guard or wetsuit
Test your gear on land before getting in the water
Put the mask on snugly and adjust the strap
Place the snorkel mouthpiece comfortably in your mouth
Enter the water slowly and calmly
Float face down with your body relaxed
Breathe slowly and steadily through the snorkel
Keep your face in the water and look ahead and down
Use gentle fin kicks to move forward
Avoid splashing and sudden movements
Clear water from the snorkel by exhaling sharply if needed
Clear water from the mask by lifting the bottom edge and exhaling through your nose
Stay aware of boats, waves, currents, and marine life
Keep a safe distance from coral and underwater creatures
Do not touch or stand on reefs
Snorkel with a buddy when possible
Stay within your comfort level and return to shore if tired or uncomfortable
Remove gear carefully after exiting the water
Rinse and dry equipment after use
