Open the damper fully
Make sure the fireplace and chimney are clean and clear
Place a few sheets of crumpled newspaper or fire starter in the firebox
Add dry kindling in a loose teepee or log cabin shape
Place a few small, dry firewood pieces on top
Leave space for air to flow
Light the newspaper or fire starter in several places
Keep the fireplace screen or glass door slightly open if needed for airflow
Let the kindling catch before adding larger logs
Add larger logs gradually once the fire is established
Never use gasoline, lighter fluid, or other accelerants
Keep a fire extinguisher, water, or baking soda nearby
Never leave the fire unattended
Fully extinguish the fire before leaving or going to sleep
