Rinse broccoli under cold water.
Cut into bite-size florets and trim thick stems.
Cut stems into thin slices so they cook evenly.
Add 1 to 2 inches of water to a pot.
Place a steamer basket in the pot without letting the water touch the broccoli.
Bring water to a boil.
Add broccoli to the steamer basket.
Cover with a lid.
Steam until bright green and tender-crisp:
Florets: 3 to 5 minutes
Thicker stems: 5 to 7 minutes
Check doneness with a fork.
Carefully remove broccoli and drain if needed.
Season immediately with salt, pepper, lemon juice, or olive oil.
