How To Steam Vegetables Without A Steamer?

Wash and cut the vegetables into even pieces

Add 1 to 2 inches of water to a pot

Place a heatproof colander, sieve, or metal strainer inside the pot without letting it touch the water

Put the vegetables in the colander or strainer

Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid

Bring the water to a boil, then reduce to a simmer

Steam until the vegetables are tender

Check the water level occasionally and add more if needed

Remove the vegetables carefully and serve immediately

Use a metal bowl set on a trivet or ring if a colander is not available

Use a microwave-safe bowl with a little water and a loose cover if steaming in the microwave

Use a foil ball or small heatproof rack to keep vegetables above the water if needed
