Remove hardware, tape off nearby surfaces, and protect floors with drop cloths
Test the paint and wood finish in a small hidden area first
Choose a stripping method: chemical stripper, heat gun, infrared tool, or sanding
Apply chemical stripper with a brush in a thick, even layer if using that method
Let the stripper sit for the recommended time until the paint softens
Scrape softened paint off with a plastic or metal putty knife, following the wood grain
Reapply stripper to stubborn areas and repeat as needed
Use fine steel wool or abrasive pads for detailed moldings and corners
Neutralize or clean the wood according to the stripper instructions
Allow the wood to dry completely
Sand the surface smooth with progressively finer grits
Vacuum and wipe away dust with a tack cloth
Dispose of paint residue, rags, and stripper waste safely according to local rules
Wear gloves, eye protection, and a respirator when required
Avoid overheating the wood or creating dust if the paint may contain lead
